Deseret Ranch Tours

The Wild About Birds Nature Center has an exclusive birding lease on Deseret Ranch. Deseret Ranch is Utah’s largest ranch with 225,000 acres. Deseret Ranch is a National Audubon Important Bird Area (IBA). It features a diversity of habitats from sub alpine, mixed montane coniferous and aspen forests to riparian stream corridors, sage-steppe, desert scrub, grassland, wet meadow, pond and lake. During a typical birding day on Deseret Ranch we will see over 100 bird species.

Over 275 bird species have been recorded here (62% of the Utah Bird List) and 170 species nest on the ranch (38% of the Utah Bird List). Ranch specialty birds are Ferruginous Hawk, Calliope Hummingbird, Burrowing and Flammulated Owl, Prairie Falcon, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Gray and Dusky Flycatcher, to name a few. Additionally, we often see a variety of mammals including moose, elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, badger, coyote and prairie dogs along with carpet waves of wild flowers in season, butterflies and dragonflies.

We guide private groups on ½ day, full day or multiple day excursions. The season starts in April when Greater Sage Grouse are on the lek and continue through September. Group size ranges from 1 person to 28 folks (on a 30 passenger bus). We recommend a smaller group which provides an intimate nature experience. We provide transportation, guide, pay trespass fee, snack and beverage served in the field.

Deseret Ranch is located in northern Utah, straddling parts of Rich, Cache, and Morgan Counties.

Other locations we tour include Desert Ranches of Nebraska, where Greater Prairies Chicken, Upland Sandpiper, Dickcissel and Field Sparrow are among the most commonly sighted, and the Ruby Mountains in Elko County, Nevada, where you'll see things such as Himalayan Snowcocks and Rocky Mountain Goats.
